RESTRICTED PURINE DIET

These are dietary recommendations for people who have had gout.

 

Foods highest in purines (150-825 mg. per 100 Gm.). These foods must be eliminated from the diet:
  • Sweetbreads
  • Liver
  • Anchovies
  • Kidneys
  • Sardines
  • Brains
  • Meat extracts
  • Gravies
  • Herring

GROUP II

Foods high in purines (50-150 mg. per 100 Gm.):

  • Meat
  • Dried beans
  • Poultry
  • Dried lentils
  • Fish
  • Seafood
  • Dried peas
  • Oatmeal
  • Wheat germ or bran
Two ounces of meat, fish or fowl will be allowed once a day, five time a week unless physician orders further restrictions (usually eliminated on Tuesdays and Fridays).


GROUP III

Foods lowest in purines (0-15 mg. per 100 Gm.):

  • Fruits of all kinds
  • Vegetables, except those listed above
  • Most breads, cereals and cereal products
  • Sugar, syrup and sweets
  • Milk and fruit desserts
  • Vegetable and cream soups
  • Milk
  • Cheese
  • Fats of all types
  • Nuts of all varieties
  • Gelatin
  • Eggs
